Today in Hilarity - John McCain Says Mitt Romney’s Tax Returns Did Not Cause Him Not to Select Mitt as the VP Nominee – Says He Found a Better Candidate

No, Does Not Help Mitt But Gives the Rest of Us a Great Laugh

The issue over releasing his tax returns continues to dog Mitt Romney, because he won’t release more than his 2010 and 2012 filings.  This has caused a lot of criticism, even from fellow Republicans but Mitt is adamant.  So apparently the Mitt campaign was looking from some support from John McCain, which they got.  But it is probably not the support that they wanted.

See Sen. McCain vetted Mr. Romney for the VP position, and in doing so he received and reviewed 20 years of Mr. Romney’s tax returns.  So Mr. McCain is certainly in a position to say whether or not there was the kind of smoking gun in those returns that would make Mr. Romney’s financial results a liability.  And Mr. McCain has said no, there was not.

"Of course not," McCain told POLITICO when asked if the contents of Romney's tax returns disqualified him from the selection process. "I don’t know what depths these people won’t reach. Obviously, it’s just outrageous. That’s just outrageous. It shows the – it’s so disgraceful for them to allege something that they have absolutely no knowledge of."

Now there are several interesting points here.  The first is that Mr. McCain is furious because people are alleging “something they have absolutely no knowledge of”, which is true but skips over the rather important part that the reason they have no knowledge of it is that Mr. Romney refuses to release the information.  So who exactly is the problem here?

But the really hilarious thing is what Mr. McCain said about who he did choose over Mr. Romney.

Asked why he chose not to go with Romney, McCain said: "Oh come on, because we thought that Sarah Palin was the better candidate.

Of course this gives the Mittster a new and maybe greatly effective campaign slogan.

Mitt Romney – a Great Candidate, Just Not as Good as Sarah Palin

Yep, sure sounds like a winning slogan to us, winning for Mr. Obama that is.
